Pohugarh: Asia’s first natural zoo

The Phoshugarh also known as Pohugarh is located in the heart of historic Jerenga Pathar in Sivasagar District. The Pohugarh was constructed during the reigon of Swargadeo Rudrasingha (A.D 1696-A.D 1714) as a natural havitat for animals. It is marked by series of khawol or water bodies and earthen ramparts within a partially square plan. The length and breadth of the bank inside the outer khawoi is 670 metres ans 630 metres respectively. Each khawol or ditch is around 15 ft wide. There were only two passages to the Pohugarh. The Pohugarh was planned in such a way that on entering it took nearly 24 hours to reach the exit. The Pohugarh has both historicla and wildlife importance. Now-a-days the Pohugarh is a paradise to both local and migratory birds. Every year the place is visited by thousands of migratory birds during the winter season and has thus become a major spot of tourist attraction.
