Handloom and Textile

Source

Handloom weaving is a vital cottage industry in Assam, particularly in the rural areas of Sivasagar District, where it serves as a primary livelihood for many. The Assistant Director's office, located near the State Fire Service Station at Jengonikotia, oversees various aspects of this industry. The Co-operative Section, established under the Assam Co-operative Act 2007, supports 42 registered primary Cooperative Societies with a dedicated staff of four. The Weaver's Extension Service Unit (WESU) provides raw materials to around 200 registered weavers, who produce traditional Assamese textiles such as Gamocha and Mekhela Chador. Additionally, three Handloom Training Centres (HTCs) in Nazira, Amguri, and Sivasagar offer a one-year Artisan Course to unemployed youth, equipping them with comprehensive weaving skills and knowledge. These centers admit 20 trainees annually, providing stipends and specialized training to enhance their employability and preserve Assam's rich weaving heritage.
