Golaghar or Magazine House

Updated: Jun 8

Golaghar, also known as the Magazine House, is an intriguing historical structure. Shaped like a traditional do-chala hut, it is made of bricks and features a small porch. This structure is located in front of the Talatalghar, an important site from the Ahom dynasty.

The Golaghar measures 23 meters in length and 12.25 meters in width, with walls that are 2.15 meters thick. These thick walls suggest that the building was meant to be strong and secure. The structure has many circular and square holes in its walls, which served as ventilation. Historically, the Golaghar is believed to have been used as a magazine house by the Ahoms. A magazine house was typically used to store ammunition and weapons.
