Hidden away in Jobolating village near Bokota Mouza, about 27 kilometers from Sivasagar, there's a very special tree called Bakhar Bengena, which means "Divine Jasmine." It's not like any other tree; it's a living memory of the splendid Ahom empire that once thrived in this area.
What makes Bakhar Bengena so special? Well, scientists have figured out that this tree is an incredible 580 years old! Just think about all the things it has seen over the centuries.
Back in 1939, a famous Indian plant expert named U N Kanchilan found this amazing tree and named it Rendia Ulizinsa. But even before that, local stories talked about how it might have been planted in the 14th century by King Mahamanikya to show where his kingdom was. Others think it was kept safe by someone working for King Swargadeo Suhungmung or maybe by the Chutia king. These stories add to the mystery and charm of Bakhar Bengena.
This old tree caught the attention of a group of scientists led by Dr. S K Basumatary, along with Dr. Swati Tripathi, Dr. S K Bera, and Dr. C M Mautiyal from the Birbal Sahni Institute in Lucknow. Together with local expert Dr. Dipak Nath, they did lots of tests on different parts of the tree.
Their hard work paid off! After two years, they confirmed through special tests that Bakhar Bengena is indeed about 580 years old. This discovery was shared with everyone on November 14, 2014, which was a big moment for the tree's story.
But what's even more fascinating is the fruit of Bakhar Bengena. It's not like any other fruit you'd find elsewhere. This mystical tree grows brinjal fruits that look like they have a crown, similar to a pomegranate. People find this very interesting and love to come see this unique tree.
The story of Bakhar Bengena isn't just about science; it's about connecting with history and nature's wonders. It's like a living bridge to the past, reminding us of the beauty and secrets hidden in a single, ancient tree.
